La Fortuna Waterfalls

Falling more than 230 feet, or the equivalent of seven stories, the waterfall is spectacular. The road leading to the waterfall is only partially paved and four wheel drives is recommended. There are steep inclines on the road on the way to the top of the falls that will require some stamina if walking or a sure tractioned vehicle.

Many people choose to walk to the falls as the scenery is quite beautiful along the well defined trail and it is a much easier walk. Along the way there are several small restaurants where beverages and water can be purchased- it is recommended that you bring bottled water if you are planning to hike to the base of the falls. The path to the base of the falls is well defined and takes you through the rocky canyon where you can hear the thundering water below you. It is a steep downhill path, but well worth the effort. There is a small fee collected at the entrance to the falls. The fee is collected by a non profit group, Association de Desarollo de Fortuna, that reinvests all monies into the preservation of the area. Swimming in the base pond is acceptable, but it is recommended that you stay away from the splashing at the base of the falls. This is a unique opportunity to swim in clear, cool rainforest water. Bring some long pants for after your swim as the water can be quite chilly. Be on the lookout for the amazing toucans in the area.
