The amazing Jardín Botánico de Arenal or the Botanical Gardens of Arenal is located approximately 3 miles east of the town of La Fortuna on the continental divide. The garden is the home to over 2500 rare tropical species, as well as world famous collections of orchids and roses. Large numbers of exotic birds are drawn to the beautiful gardens. The collection of ginger and heliconias is particularly spectacular. Founded by Englishman, Michael Lemay in 1991, attendance is limited to twenty people an hour, making the gardens a personal and remarkably intimate excursion.
The Arenal Botanical Gardens also a boast a lovely Asian garden complete with waterfalls. There is also a hummingbird sanctuary and butterfly retreat. The park is always closed in October. The gardens are designed to be a living nature classroom, allowing for students at all levels to admire the beauty of the natural surroundings in a protected situation. The purpose of the gardens is to preserve native species of plants and create a natural habitat for birds, insects and all other native wildlife. Many interesting varieties of snakes, including boas and pythons are also well represented in the gardens.
